How to Use Accesskeys

Accesskeys enable site navigation via the keyboard, without using a mouse or touchpad. (Please note: not all browsers support accesskeys. Refer to the 'Considerations' section of this page for more tips on assigning accesskeys for your website, and/or using accesskeys on other sites.)

Using Windows® browsers:

  1. To select a link: Simultaneously press the Alt key and the corresponding accesskey (see the list above) for the desired link. [Example: Press 'Alt' and '9' to select the 'Contact' link.]
  2. To follow the selected link: Press the Enter (or 'Return') key.
  3. To move to (and select) the next link on the page: Press the Tab key.

Using Mac® browsers:

Press the Ctrl key (instead of the Alt key, as for Windows® browsers - see above) and the desired accesskey. [Example: Press 'Ctrl' and '3' to select the 'Sitemap' link. Then press 'Enter' to follow the link to the sitemap.]

Customizability

This site also provides custom styles enabling users to choose the text size, colours and layout of their preference.

Using links provided on the website:

  1. To choose a style: Click on the Accessible layout or Classic layout links provided in the main (top) menu of this website.

Using Mozilla® browsers:

  1. To choose a style: Select the View menu in the main (top) toolbar of your browser.
  2. This step depends on which browser you are using: If you are using Firefox®, select the Page Style option from the View menu of your browser. (Please note: similar options with different names are provided in various browsers. For example, select the Style option instead if you are using an Opera™ browser.) A submenu will be displayed.
  3. If custom styles are provided*: Select an option from the browser's submenu to change styles. [*Note: Custom style options may not always be available on all websites. This website provides a choice between an Accessible layout or the Classic layout.]

Advantages

Accesskeys, or keyboard shortcuts, are preferred by many users in navigating websites. Using the keyboard instead of a mouse or touchpad can be faster as well as more accessible.

Considerations

Not all browsers support accesskeys. Browsers' 'built-in' shortcut key combinations also may not be compatible with the accesskeys designated on some websites.

Numeric accesskeys reduce the potential for overlapping definitions since browsers and assistive technologies most commonly use letter keys as shortcuts.
